Il restait dans la piece avec nous, et le plus souvent s'occupait de son
cote a un paisible travail de bureau. Il agissait donc par action de
presence; quelquefois il a surveille une experience, repetant a un eleve
la question que je lui avais posee, quand l'eleve semblait ne pas la
comprendre; mais c'etait assez rare. Jamais il n'a gronde les enfants a
propos des experiences. C'est un maitre qui me semble doue de serieuses
aptitudes pedagogiques, il a beaucoup de douceur et de fermete et sait se
faire obeir sans elever la voix et sans punir.

Chaque eleve entrait seul dans le cabinet du directeur, ou il etait envoye
a son tour par le professeur de la classe. Les enfants etaient calmes,
polis, curieux des experiences. Je n'ai eu a reprimer aucun acte
d'indiscipline, et ce n'est pas etonnant, puisque chacun d'eux restait
en tete a tete avec moi. J'ai donc pu me laisser aller a une certaine
familiarite avec eux, pour eveiller leur sympathie et dissiper leur
timidite. On sait que lorsqu'on experimente collectivement sur un groupe,
il faut se surveiller davantage, car la familiarite de l'experimentateur
provoque facilement l'impertinence des enfants. Mais ce danger etait
ecarte, car jamais un enfant n'a attendu dans le cabinet son tour de passer
a l'experience; ceux qui attendaient restaient en classe, par consequent
chaque eleve etait parfaitement bien isole.

La petite ecole dont je parle a donc ete mon centre d'operations. Mais de
temps en temps, je l'ai quittee pour aller repeter mes experiences dans une
autre ecole primaire, situee dans un autre quartier de Paris. Cette seconde
ecole etait pour moi une ecole de verification. Les recherches par la
suggestion sont tres delicates; une indiscretion d'eleve peut quelquefois
les fausser; je desirais donc me transporter parfois dans un milieu
nouveau, pour rechercher si j'y obtiendrais les memes resultats[34].

Various, or Various Production, is an English dubstep/electronic music duo formed in 2003. Alfred Binet (July 8, 1857 October 18, 1911), French psychologist and inventor of the first usable intelligence test, the basis of todays IQ test. Born in Nice, Binet was a French psychologist who published the first modern intelligence test, the Binet-Simon intelligence scale, in 1905.
